Singapore is set to become the world’s second largest gambling hub in dollar value, with forecast earnings of $6.4 billion this year overtaking Las Vegas which is projected to earn $6.2 billion. Making this projection at a gaming conference in Macau, the American Gaming Association president Frank Fahrenkopf said Singapore’s two casinos had exceeded expectations and turned the city state into Asia’s second global gaming hub.

Singapore’s gaming market would likely overtake Las Vegas as the world’s second-largest gaming centre as early as this year, Fahrenkopf told a Macau press conference yesterday. Singapore’s two resort casinos earned $5.1 billion in less than a year of operation, with the Resort World Sentosa opening for business in February 2010 and the Marina Bay Sands two months later. The two casinos have raked in $1.63 billion in earnings in the first quarter of this year. But Macau would remain the top gaming hub in the world, with its more than three dozens of casinos having earned $23.5 billion in revenue last year. Media reports said Las Vegas’ popularity was declining due to America’s ailing economy and stiff competition from Macau and Singapore casinos.

Singapore will overtake Australia and South Korea by 2011 to become Asia’s second largest casino gaming market after Macao. This prediction was made in a new report from PricewaterhouseCoopers International (PwC); one of the world’s largest providers of assurance, tax, and business consulting services, which looks at the trends in both the casino and online gaming industries. “Singapore has made a dramatic entry to the casino gaming market with the two integrated resorts (IRs)”, “Together with a booming tourism industry, we are projecting casino revenues to hit 2.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2010. And with a full year’s operation for both integrated resorts in 2011, we could expect revenues to reach 5.5 billion U.S. dollars,” Greg Unsworth, PwC Singapore’s Entertainment & Media Industry Leader was quoted by the Business Times.

“The Singapore market took off because of the nature and scale of the IRs, compared with South Korea and Australia where the casinos are smaller and tend to attract local visitors, and not the tourist who’s going for a broader entertainment experience,” Unsworth said. Singapore’s two IRs include Resorts World Sentosa opened in February this year and the Marina Bay Sands opened two months later.

The economic crisis is taking its toll on the casino and entertainment industry, as the world’s biggest casinos have for the last year struggled to keep their gaming machines and tables humming. Macao, the former Portuguese colony on the south China coast, has felt the impact of the slowdown but now the Chinese economy is reviving, providing hope to owners of the world’s two biggest gambling palaces, the Venetian Macao and the brand-new City of Dreams. While those resorts get most of the attention, Macao is now home to five of the world’s 10 largest casinos. Tops in the U.S. is Foxwoods, in Connecticut. Here is a list of 20 biggest Casinos of the world.

20 Photos

This casino and spa complex was the first to open in Atlantic City after New Jersey legalized casino gambling in 1978. However, Resorts has suffered from the economic downturn as well as from competition from Native American-owned casinos in the Northeast. In August, the hotel’s owner, Colony Capital, asked the state to approve the transfer of its stake to its lenders, including Credit Suisse (CS).
The Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel has become one of the biggest landmarks for gamblers throughout Asia. Controlled by Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands (LVS), the Venetian was the first giant casino to open on Macao’s Cotai Strip, an area of reclaimed land offshore from downtown Macao. A stroll around the resort gives you a glance of luxury—and a somewhat weird combination of facilities, attractions, and amenities such as Cirque du Soleil’s Zaia show.

A report which appeared recently in local newspapers claims one of Singapore’s top 40 richest men lost an incredible US$76.5 million (S$100 million) while playing baccarat at two of Singapore’s casinos. While the report fails to mention the man’s name, it could in fact be any one of many on the Singapore rich list. However, anyone in the top 33 would surely be smarting after the gambling spree considering their personal wealth is estimated at less than $200 million each.

The two casinos which benefited from the high-roller’s losses at the baccarat tables were the Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa. In addition, another high-roller from Sabah in Malaysia, lost US$38.3 million (S$50 million) at the same two casinos over a similar period representing a combined loss for the businessmen of US$115 million. Commenting on the news, the Director of the Center for Gaming Research at Nevada University, David G. Schwartz said:

“That’s a ton of money. They could have pooled a little more money together and bought the debt on M Resort.” In the meantime, Tuesday saw shares in Las Vegas Sands soar on the New York Stock Exchange, before closing up a staggering 38% at $39. Las Vegas Sands Chairman Sheldon Adelson (pictured above) has even predicted that the Marina Bay Sands would soon achieve an annual cash flow of around $1 billion. Adelson said he also believed that within just a few years Singapore would replace Las Vegas as the world’s second biggest gambling resort.

Celebrity Gambler
Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou lost nearly S$2mil at Marina Bay Sands Casino in Singapore, Nanyang Siang Pau reported. The superstar had visited the casino during his concert tour in the republic last month. He gambled off between S$100,000 and S$200,000 per bet. In just two days, Chou lost almost S$2mil playing bacarrat. A customer of the casino said Chou was accompanied by his manager and male friends. According to the customer, Chou had good etiquette on the gambling table and he only wanted to be served by ‘aunties’.

Singapore’s biggest loser?
Apparently Jay Chou isn’t the biggest loser in Singapore as a local Singaporean man lost S$26mil in a three-day gambling spree at the casino in Resorts World Sentosa (RWS). The unlucky gambler plans to sue the casino for loaning him a huge sum of money to gamble without first checking his financial position. The businessman is director of Far Ocean Sea Products, a seafood processing and trading company operating out of Fishery Port Road in Jurong. According to a legal document, the man was loaned S$500,000 for gambling by the casino in March and the loan was later increased to S$2mil the following month. When his losses exceeded S$4mil, his girlfriend cried and begged the casino not to loan him any more money but in spite of that, the casino staff told him that he could continue getting loans although he had exceeded the credit limit.
